Bonus
In today's Tribune, there is a story about a group "soliciting nominations for the nation's 10 worst unionized teachers, and says it will give $10,000 to each of the 10—if they agree to stop teaching forever."
Seriously, though, if you want to find out who are the worst teachers, ask students. They're pretty honest. And I bet nine out of ten students would say, "Get rid of Chicago Teacher Man."
I'm torn. For $10,000, I'd be tempted, but I might have more than that in medical bills from injuries sustained working with ED students. Is that part of the deal? or is the goal just to remind people that public schools are terrible and money should go to private schools, who tend to reject my students? Private schools don't want the violent kids that attack teachers apparently.
I'm not a big CTU fan, and I agree with your earlier sentiments regarding it being a shitty union protecting shitty teachers. And shitty teachers suck, because they can totally make or break a kid's spirit (on so many levels).
But what about all the shitty administrators? I'm not talking about principals and aps, I'm talking about peeps down at 125 S Clark. Why do watchdog groups publish teachers' salaries, but not AIOs?
They're firing teachers left and right currently, but are any of the lawyers for CPS getting pink slips?
I realize this particular article is about clearing the way for new, better teachers and not about the bottom line, but isn't everything really about the bottom line when we get down to it?
And, incidentally, I'm guessing your students would raise $5k to keep you...
I think it's really easy to beat up on teachers. But I'm serious, I don't have those medical bills, so I'd take the money and split.
I totally agree with ms g about the administrators downtown. In fact, I'd love to start a similar campaign to get rid of the worst one. I'd personally donate $1,000 to that fund.
Interesting article. I brought it in and we discussed it in class today. We conveniently are talking about labor and unions right now. The kids had LOTS to say about it.
so fresh and i saw the billboard in the middle of times square in nyc, and we wondering what it was all about. it is huge, the size of a building, and declares, "vote for the worst unionized teachers who can't be fired."
